No heat in winter, no cool in a heat wave, busted lines. We answer the phone day or night, weekends included.
Victor has grown fast. The population is up around twelve percent since 2010 and there are subdivisions going in across the town right now. In a new build, the heating and cooling is a line on a cost sheet like everything else. It is specified to meet code and hit a number, which usually means the base model in the range, single stage, lowest efficiency that qualifies. That is not a scandal, it is how production housing works everywhere.
What it means for you is worth knowing. Base equipment has fewer stages, simpler controls, and less margin, so it runs harder to do the same job and the parts that wear reach the end sooner. Then it fails at eight or ten years and the owner assumes something went badly wrong. Usually nothing did. We will tell you plainly what tier of equipment you have, what is realistic to expect from it, and whether this particular fault is worth repairing.
Justin VanCassele and Colby Baker run AmeriHeat together. Colby is a veteran. Both owners are on jobs every week across Rochester and Monroe, Wayne and Ontario Counties.
Give them a call. They actually pick up.
A couple you can rule out yourself. The rest need gauges and a meter.
The outdoor unit hums and the fan on top sits still, or the compressor strains then clicks off. That is the capacitor, the most frequent cooling repair there is. It is a small cheap part, it weakens gradually rather than failing outright, and it can be measured. We carry them, so this one is usually sorted on the first visit.
Check the grey box on the wall next to it has its handle fully pushed in, then check the breaker. Reset it fully off and on once, then wait, because compressors often have a built in delay before restarting. If it trips again immediately, that is a fault and worth a call.
Start with the filter, because restricted airflow causes weak cooling and eventually ices the coil. If a fresh filter does not fix it, the indoor coil may be dirty or the blower is not reaching speed. Both are common on systems that have never been serviced.
Turn the thermostat to off rather than down, and put the fan to on. Running a system with a frozen coil sends liquid refrigerant back to a compressor built only for vapour, and that is how a small fault becomes the most expensive repair on the system.
Common in newer two storey homes here. Often it is not the equipment at all but the duct design, with long runs to the bedrooms and not enough return air upstairs. Replacing the outdoor unit will not fix it. We would rather diagnose that than sell you a system.
A slow decline usually means refrigerant escaping. The system is sealed and does not consume it, so low means leaking. That wants the leak located rather than a refill, because topping it up sells you the same problem again next year.
There is a real difference between a base single stage unit and the mid or upper tier of the same manufacturer's range, and it is not only efficiency. Better equipment stages its output rather than running flat out every time, which means longer gentler cycles, steadier temperatures, and less wear on the parts that start and stop. Base equipment does one speed. On a mild June day that is fine. Through a humid stretch in July it runs hard, cycles more, and asks more of the capacitor and contactor than a staged system would.
Victor grew from farmland fast. The Thruway groundbreaking in 1946 started it, Eastview arrived in 1971, and the town has been converting fields into subdivisions ever since, with more approved this year. That means an unusual share of the housing here is under twenty five years old and came with whatever the builder specified. It also means a lot of systems are hitting the age where the first real fault shows up, all at roughly the same time.
On a system this age the answer is usually repair, and we will say so. A capacitor, a contactor, a fan motor, a blocked drain, those are all worth fixing on a ten year old unit without much debate. The conversation only changes if the compressor has gone or there is a significant leak on an older refrigerant, because those repairs start approaching what replacement costs. We will put both numbers in front of you rather than nudging you toward the bigger job because the equipment happens to be builder grade.
The diagnostic is $99 and it is real work. We find the actual fault and give you a straight price before touching anything. No trip charge games, no quoting a replacement when a part has failed.
Quite a lot of the systems we see in newer Victor homes have never had a tune-up, because nothing prompted it. The house was new, everything worked, and there was no obvious reason to call anyone. The consequence turns up years later as a coil thick with dirt and a capacitor nobody ever measured. It is not a disaster and it is very fixable. It is just worth knowing that a system with no service history usually needs more than a single part when it finally gives out.

Heating side of the same system. Worth knowing that a smart thermostat can cause a no-heat call while looking perfectly normal.
