No heat in winter, no cool in a heat wave, busted lines. We answer the phone day or night, weekends included.
AmeriHeat is not a franchise. We are a Rochester NY based, truck-based, owner operated HVAC company. Justin or Colby answers the phone. When your AC fails in a Rochester summer, you need a diagnosis and an honest repair cost, not a sales pitch.
We are one of the few Rochester area HVAC companies still actively servicing fuel oil and handling oil-to-gas conversions. We mostly respond within 10 to 30 minutes across our core service area. Same day service when available, next day at the latest. 24/7 for true emergencies.
We service every fuel oil system type: oil furnaces, oil-fired boilers, oil burners, oil tanks, and Thermo-Pride installations. We handle the full oil-to-gas conversion including permits. You get the price before any work begins. No surprises.

AC system failures always have a specific cause. Here are the most common ones we find on Rochester service calls, from the easiest single-visit repairs to the more serious failures that point toward replacement.
AmeriHeat diagnoses and repairs air conditioner system failures across Rochester NY and the surrounding Monroe, Wayne, and Ontario County area. When your AC stops working in a Rochester summer, the cause is almost always one of several specific failures, not a mystery. This page covers the most common AC system failures we see, what they cost in terms of repair vs replacement, and what happens when we arrive for a service call.
Capacitor and contactor failure. The run capacitor is the most common single-part AC failure we see in Rochester. It is a wear item that degrades over time and fails when the system is under the most stress: typically during the hottest days of summer when demand is highest. A failed run capacitor means the compressor or outdoor fan motor will not start. The AC may hum but not run. Capacitor replacement is typically a same-visit repair. Contactors fail in a similar way and produce a similar symptom: outdoor unit will not power on at all. We carry both on the truck.
Frozen evaporator coil. The Macedon job in our recent work section shows exactly what this looks like: filter completely plugged with debris, AC coil frozen solid from lack of airflow. No cooling. Rochester's late summer humidity from Lake Ontario makes frozen coil failures more common here than in drier climates. A dirty filter plus high humidity means the coil ices faster. The fix in a straightforward frozen coil case is filter replacement and allowing the coil to thaw, followed by verifying refrigerant pressure. If the refrigerant is also low, that requires a more complete repair.
Refrigerant leak. Slow refrigerant leaks cause the system to gradually lose cooling capacity, then eventually freeze the coil or trip pressure switches. Older Rochester AC systems are particularly prone to leak development as copper lines and coil connections age. Refrigerant repair requires locating the leak, repairing or replacing the component, evacuating the system, and recharging. Cost depends heavily on where the leak is and whether the leaking component (evaporator coil or condenser) needs replacement.
Compressor failure. The compressor is the heart of the AC system and the most expensive component. Compressor failures often result from running low on refrigerant for too long, sustained overheating from a dirty condenser coil, or capacitor failure that caused repeated hard-start stress on the compressor. A failed compressor on a system over 12 to 15 years old usually means the honest recommendation is replacement rather than a compressor swap. We give you both costs and let you decide.
Dirty condenser coil. The outdoor condenser unit accumulates leaves, cottonwood, grass clippings, and debris over the years. A severely fouled condenser restricts airflow through the outdoor unit, causing the compressor to overheat and shut off on a high pressure safety switch. The system may run briefly then shut off, or not produce full cooling capacity. Condenser coil cleaning is part of annual AC maintenance. When it goes years without cleaning, the condenser restriction accelerates compressor wear.
Rochester's housing stock skews older. A significant portion of Monroe County homes have AC systems that are 15 to 20 years old or older. These systems are past their expected service life and under increasing strain every summer. Rochester also has longer heating seasons than most markets, which means AC systems get a shorter operating window each year and may sit unused for 7 or more months before being called on in July. Capacitors degrade faster when systems sit idle and then face sudden high-demand operation. The Penfield AC clean and check in our hero photo shows what a coil looks like after years of service without cleaning: that fouling directly reduces system efficiency and increases the likelihood of failure during peak summer demand.
Annual AC maintenance is the most reliable way to prevent system failures. A tune-up in late spring catches failing capacitors, low refrigerant, dirty coils, and other developing issues before they cause a complete failure during the hottest week of July. See our maintenance plans page for residential AC tune-up options.

When we arrive for an AC system failure call, we do a full diagnosis before recommending anything. We check the thermostat and control signals, measure refrigerant pressures, inspect the evaporator coil and check for ice or fouling, test the capacitors and contactor, check the outdoor unit for airflow restriction and compressor operation, and verify electrical connections and breaker condition. The diagnosis tells us whether the failure is a simple component replacement or a more involved repair.
You get the diagnosis and the repair cost before any work begins. If the system is older and the repair cost approaches a significant percentage of replacement cost, we tell you that honestly and give you both options. We service all major AC brands: Carrier, Trane, Goodman, Rheem (authorized), York, American Standard, Bryant, Heil (authorized dealer), and all other residential AC brands. For new AC installation after a complete system failure, we install Heil and Rheem systems. Pittsford, Fairport, Penfield, Webster, and the wider Monroe, Wayne, and Ontario County service area.
