If your home was built since the 1980s and already has ductwork, central air is usually the right call. Common service issues are refrigerant leaks, capacitor failures, and dirty coils. Most repairs are done in one visit because we keep common parts on the truck.
Older Rochester homes without ductwork, or homeowners who want zoned cooling for a single room, are better served by a ductless mini-split. We have installed plenty across Fairport, Pittsford, Penfield, Webster, and the city itself. Ductless is also our go-to recommendation for finished basements, attic bedrooms, and home additions where running new ductwork would be expensive or impractical.
Heat pumps are increasingly common in newer Rochester builds because they handle both heating and cooling from one outdoor unit. In summer they work like a standard AC. NYSEG and RG&E rebates can offset replacement costs, sometimes significantly. Worth asking about during the estimate, especially if your existing system is at end of life.
Rochester humidity is hard on AC systems. Coils get dirty fast, refrigerant levels drift, and capacitors degrade. Annual spring tune-ups catch all of that before the first hot weekend. A tuned-up system uses less power, lasts longer, and is far less likely to quit on a 90-degree day. April or May is the best time to book before the season fully kicks in.
If your AC is short-cycling, freezing up, blowing warm air, running constantly without holding the set temperature, or making new noises, the system needs attention.
