Heating and cooling in one system, no ductwork, and no gas main needed. Ductless is the right answer for a lot of Canandaigua homes. The part worth getting right is which spec you buy, because a unit rated at mild temperatures tells you nothing about a January night here. We size it to the real winter.
No heat in winter, no cool in a heat wave, busted lines. We answer the phone day or night, weekends included.
Modern cold climate mini-splits genuinely work through an upstate winter. That is not marketing, it is settled. A good one holds most of its heating output down near zero and keeps running below that. The catch is that manufacturers publish capacity at several outdoor temperatures, usually around forty seven, seventeen, and five degrees, and the headline number on the box is the mild one.
So the question that actually decides whether you are warm in January is what the unit produces at five degrees, not at forty seven. A cold climate rated system should still be holding roughly seventy to a hundred percent of its capacity down there. We size against the real design temperature for this area and show you the low temperature figures rather than the nameplate. Get that right and it heats the house. Get it wrong and you find out on the coldest night of the year.

Ductless is not the answer for every house. These are the ones where it usually is.
If you heat with a boiler and radiators you have no ducts, which means no central air is possible without major work. Ductless gives you cooling in summer without tearing into ceilings, and it can carry some of the heating load in the shoulder seasons so the boiler runs less.
The converted attic that bakes in August, the addition on the end of a duct run that never gets warm, the sunroom nobody uses half the year. One head in that room solves it without touching the rest of the system.
Plenty of properties out here have no gas available and extending a main is not realistic. A ductless heat pump needs neither gas nor ducts, just electric and a spot for the outdoor unit. That makes it one of the few genuinely practical options.

Here is one worth knowing before you buy. Some ductless units optimised hard for cooling efficiency or for cold climate heating are not especially good at pulling humidity out of the air. In a Canandaigua summer off the lake that matters, because a room can hit the set temperature and still feel clammy. It is a real characteristic of certain models, not a fault, and it is the kind of thing that turns up in the specification sheet rather than the brochure. We take it into account when picking equipment rather than finding out afterwards.
Placement decides how well it works. More than the brand does. A head mounted in the wrong spot short cycles because it senses its own discharge air, or leaves the far corner of the room untouched. The outdoor unit needs clearance and it needs to sit where winter snow and roof runoff will not bury it. We work this out at the estimate, because moving it afterwards means new line set and new holes.
A single zone system is one outdoor unit serving one indoor head, and it is the cleanest option when you are solving one problem room. A multi zone runs several heads off one outdoor unit, which suits a whole house or a few separate areas. Multi zone is not automatically better. Each head is its own thermostat, so you get real room by room control, but sizing gets more involved and an oversized multi zone spends a lot of time loafing. We work out which layout your house actually needs.
The outdoor unit goes on a pad or a wall bracket, the indoor head mounts on an outside wall, and a three inch hole carries the refrigerant lines, the electrical, and the condensate drain between them. It is far less invasive than adding ductwork, and most single zone jobs are a day. Multi zone takes longer since there are more line runs. We line hide the exterior runs properly rather than leaving bare tubing stapled to the siding.
