Water gets into oil tanks two ways: condensation forming inside the tank during seasonal temperature swings (especially common in older steel tanks that are partially full for extended periods), and water entering through degraded tank fittings or vent caps. Water settles to the bottom of the tank because it is heavier than fuel oil. When the oil supply line draws from the bottom, water gets pulled into the burner and shuts the system down. Annual maintenance includes a tank water check. If we find water, we recommend treatment or pump-out depending on the volume.
