Oil furnaces require more annual service than gas furnaces. The combustion process is dirtier, the fuel can degrade or absorb water, and the equipment needs more attention each season to run safely and efficiently.

Before calling for a repair visit, check these things in order. Some oil furnace lockouts are fixed in two minutes without a service call:
Check your oil level. An oil furnace that runs out of fuel locks out exactly the same way as one with a mechanical fault. Check the tank gauge. If you are low or empty, call your oil delivery company first.
Press the reset button once. The red reset button on the oil burner primary control resets a lockout condition. Press it once and wait 30 seconds. If the furnace lights and runs, you may be good. If it locks out again, stop pressing the reset. Repeated resets flood the combustion chamber with unburned oil and create a fire hazard. Press once, wait, then call 585 454 8422.
Check the circuit breaker. Oil furnace breakers trip occasionally. Check the panel for a tripped breaker on the furnace circuit.
Check the emergency switch. The red emergency switch, usually near the basement stairs or at the top of the stairs, can be accidentally switched off. Make sure it is in the on position.

Plugged oil nozzle: The nozzle atomizes fuel for combustion. A clogged nozzle causes poor combustion or complete lockout. We found a plugged nozzle on a Macedon oil no-heat call that is documented in our recent jobs. Nozzle replacement is a same-visit repair.
Clogged oil filter: A blocked oil filter starves the burner of fuel. The furnace attempts to start, cannot draw enough oil, and locks out. Filter replacement takes minutes.
Failed ignition transformer or electrodes: The ignition system generates the spark to light the oil burner. Failed transformers or improperly gapped electrodes cause no-ignition lockout. We carry transformers for Beckett, Riello, and Carlin burners.
Water in the fuel tank: Water accumulates in older steel tanks through condensation and delivery. Water reaches the burner and causes lockout. We found water contamination in a Palmyra oil tank that is documented in our recent jobs. Requires tank treatment and filter service.
Clogged oil pump strainer: The pump strainer catches debris from the tank. A plugged strainer restricts oil flow to the burner. Cleaned on every service call.
Heat exchanger failure: An oil furnace heat exchanger can develop holes or cracks that allow combustion gases to enter the air supply. We found a heat exchanger hole on an emergency oil no-heat call in Palmyra via combustion analysis: documented in our recent jobs. A failed heat exchanger requires replacement of the heat exchanger or the furnace.
Dirty combustion chamber: Carbon and soot buildup in the combustion chamber reduces combustion efficiency and can cause high-limit trips and lockout. Emergency cleaning restores operation. Annual cleaning prevents this from happening.
Primary control failure: The primary control is the brain of the oil burner. It manages ignition, flame sensing, and safety shutoff. Failed primary controls are replaced same visit in most cases.
