Replacing a furnace in an older Canandaigua home is not just swapping one box for another. The efficiency you pick changes how it vents, and that affects the water heater sitting next to it. Done carelessly it creates a carbon monoxide risk. We check before we quote, and Justin or Colby handles the estimate and the install.
No heat in winter, no cool in a heat wave, busted lines. We answer the phone day or night, weekends included.
Older homes here were built with one chimney serving two appliances, the furnace and the gas water heater. Both put heat up that flue, which is what kept it drafting properly. Put in a modern high efficiency furnace and it no longer uses the chimney at all. It vents out the sidewall through PVC, and the water heater is left alone on a flue sized for two appliances.
That water heater has a small burner. On its own it often cannot warm an oversized masonry chimney enough to draft, especially in an Ontario County winter. When that happens exhaust can spill back into the house, which is a carbon monoxide problem, and acidic condensation eats the flue from the inside. The fix is known, either a properly sized liner or changing the water heater to a vented unit at the same time. The fix is not the hard part. Noticing is.

Around ninety five percent of the fuel becomes heat. Vents out the sidewall in PVC, needs a condensate drain, and leaves the chimney unused, which is where the water heater question comes in. Best long run savings, and the option most Canandaigua homes end up on. We install Heil, with Rheem as a higher end choice.
Around eighty percent efficient and still vents up the existing chimney alongside the water heater, so nothing gets orphaned. Costs less up front and uses more gas over its life. Occasionally the sensible pick when sidewall venting would be difficult or the chimney work would be costly.
Plenty of properties outside the city have no gas main, and extending one is rarely worth it. A modern oil furnace is a long way ahead of one from the eighties. We still service oil when a lot of shops around here dropped it, so we can install it and look after it afterwards.

The most common mistake is fitting the same size that was there before. Furnaces used to be oversized as a matter of course, and many Canandaigua homes have had insulation or windows done since. An oversized furnace heats fast, shuts off, and repeats all day. That short cycling wears it out early, leaves cold rooms at the far end of the house, and costs more to run. We size it to the house as it is now.
Ask any installer what happens to your water heater. If you are moving to a high efficiency furnace and the water heater currently shares the chimney, the answer should involve either a correctly sized liner or changing that water heater out. If the answer is that nothing needs doing, get a second opinion. A chimney that is too big is as much of a problem as one that is too small, because it never gets warm enough to draft.
A new furnace pushed through undersized or leaky ductwork will still underperform. In older homes the ducts were often sized for the original system then extended piecemeal as rooms were added. We look before quoting and tell you up front rather than finding it on install day. Occasionally it is the reason the upstairs never heated properly.
Most replacements are a single day. We pull the old unit, set the new one, handle the gas or oil connection, do the venting, sort the condensate drain, wire the thermostat, then start it up and check it properly. That last part matters. We confirm gas pressure, temperature rise, and that everything venting in that basement drafts the way it should before we leave.
