No heat on a January night in Ontario County is not something to sit on. Most companies covering Canandaigua are running out of Rochester, and on the night everyone calls at once this end of the map gets reached last. We take true no-heat emergency calls around the clock, gas and oil, and Justin or Colby is the one who turns up.
No heat in winter, no cool in a heat wave, busted lines. We answer the phone day or night, weekends included.
Canandaigua sits a fair distance out from Rochester, and most of the companies advertising here are based up there. That is fine in October. On the first hard freeze, when every phone in the region is ringing, the far end of the service map is where the schedule slips. We cover Ontario County as part of our normal area rather than as an outlying job.
The other thing that matters out this way is oil. A lot of properties around Canandaigua still heat with oil, and plenty of Rochester companies stopped servicing it years ago. When an oil furnace locks out at eleven at night, having to ring round looking for someone who still touches oil is a bad position to be in. We never dropped it. And whoever answers the phone, Justin or Colby, is the one who drives out.
Justin VanCassele and Colby Baker run AmeriHeat together. Colby is a veteran. Both owners are on jobs every week across Rochester and Monroe, Wayne and Ontario Counties.
Give them a call. They actually pick up.
Sometimes one of these is the whole problem and it costs you nothing. If none of them fix it, call and we will come.
If the carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, or you smell gas, smoke, or burning, get everyone outside first and call from there. Same if anyone has a sudden headache, dizziness, or nausea. And never heat the house with an oven, a grill, a camp stove, or a generator. That combination kills people every winter.
A badly clogged filter is the single most common reason a furnace runs but blows cold, because the burners overheat and shut off while the fan keeps going. If yours is grey, swap it and see. It is a genuinely frequent fix.
Check the breaker. Check the switch on or near the furnace that looks like an ordinary light switch, because they get knocked off. Then check the thermostat is calling for heat and the batteries are not flat.
On oil, press reset once. If it locks out again, stop. Pressing it repeatedly pumps unburned oil into the chamber and turns a small job into a bigger one. Also check you have not simply run low on oil, which happens more often than people admit.
If your furnace vents out through the side wall, check the outside pipes are not blocked by snow or ice. A blocked intake or exhaust will shut it down on purpose. On condensing units a frozen condensate line does the same.
Ignition faults, flame sensors, inducer motors, control boards, a nozzle or pump on oil. Those need someone with the parts and a meter. That is when to stop checking and ring.
You will find pages confidently telling you pipes freeze in six hours. The honest answer is that there is no fixed number. It depends on the outdoor temperature, the wind, how well the house is sealed, its size, where the pipes run, and how warm it was when the furnace quit. Estimates for the same situation range from a few hours to several days, which tells you how little the estimate is worth.
Measure it rather than guess it. Write down the indoor temperature when you notice the heat is off, then check it again every half hour or so. In a reasonably insulated house around twenty degrees outside, losing one or two degrees an hour is typical. That trend tells you far more about your actual situation than any number on a website. Pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces, and unheated areas are the ones that go first.
Shut the doors on rooms you are not using and gather everyone into one space, ideally not the room with the most exposed plumbing. Let the cold taps drip a little on exterior walls to keep water moving. Open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls so what warmth is left can reach the pipes. Towels along the bottom of draughty doors help more than people expect. If it is going to be a long wait and the house is emptying out, it is worth knowing where your main water shutoff is
Take a photo of the data plate on your furnace, the one inside the front panel with the make and model on it. Keep it on your phone. When you ring at half past ten on a freezing night, being able to read that out means whoever is coming can bring the right part rather than making a second trip. It takes a minute now and saves hours later.
