The worst time to buy a furnace is the morning yours dies in January. No time to compare, no time to size it properly, and you take whatever can be fitted fastest. If yours is getting old, the money is in deciding now rather than deciding under pressure. Justin or Colby quotes it and installs it.
No heat in winter, no cool in a heat wave, busted lines. We answer the phone day or night, weekends included.
Almost every bad furnace purchase has the same story behind it. The old one died on the coldest night of the year, the house was freezing, and the decision got made in a couple of hours. Under that pressure nobody compares options, nobody questions the sizing, and the answer is usually whatever unit is sitting on a truck and can go in today. The result gets lived with for the next twenty years.
If your furnace is fifteen years or older, or the repairs have started stacking up, you are already in the window where planning beats reacting. Booking an estimate while it still works costs nothing and takes the emergency out of the decision. You get time to look at the numbers, we get time to size it against your actual house rather than copying the plate off the old one, and nothing is being decided while your family is wearing coats indoors.

Give them a call. They actually pick up.
Age alone does not mean replace. These are the things that actually shift the maths.
This one ends the discussion. That component keeps combustion gases separate from the air circulating through your house, and a crack lets them mix. On an older furnace the repair rarely makes financial sense against replacement, and continuing to run it is not an option we would offer.
One repair on a fifteen year old furnace is just a repair. Three across two winters is a pattern, and it usually means several components are reaching the end together. That is the point where money spent on repairs starts working against you.
If part of the house has always run cold, the furnace may not be the culprit. Ductwork, insulation, and sizing all matter. Replacing the box alone will not fix a distribution problem, and we would rather tell you that before you spend the money.
A twenty year old furnace running well, venting correctly, with a sound heat exchanger, is not an emergency. It is a reason to plan and to get the estimate done. It is not a reason to be talked into replacing it this week.

The quickest way to quote a replacement is to read the rating off the old furnace and order the same again. It is also how homes end up oversized. Equipment was routinely sized generously years ago, and since then plenty of Henrietta houses have had insulation added or windows replaced, so they need less heat than they used to. An oversized furnace comes up to temperature fast, shuts off, repeats all day, and that short cycling wears the equipment while leaving the far rooms uneven.
Sizing is not optional in New York. The state energy code requires new heating and cooling equipment to be sized using an ACCA Manual J load calculation or an approved equivalent. It is not a nicety some contractors offer. If a quote arrives with a size on it and nobody measured your house or asked about insulation and windows, that is worth questioning. Manual S then caps how far above the calculated load the equipment may go, which is what stops a house ending up with a furnace half again bigger than it needs.
Henrietta is really several towns by age. The population went from about three thousand to fourteen thousand in the decade after the war, Riverton was laid out in the early seventies with several hundred homes, and construction has not stopped since. A fifties ranch, a seventies Riverton house, and a recent build each have different envelopes, different ductwork, and different venting options. Sizing one from the other is guesswork.
A high efficiency condensing furnace usually vents out the side wall in plastic pipe and needs a condensate drain, so it stops using the chimney. If your water heater shares that chimney, leaving it alone on an oversized flue causes drafting problems and has to be handled at the same time. A standard efficiency unit keeps the chimney and avoids that, but burns more fuel over its life. Neither is automatically right, and we go through both at the estimate.
Most replacements are a single day. We take the old unit out, set the new one, make the fuel connection, handle the venting, sort the condensate drain where there is one, wire the thermostat, then commission it properly. That last part is where corners get cut. We check the gas pressure, the temperature rise across the heat exchanger, and that everything venting in that basement drafts correctly before we pack up.

Plenty of faults that feel terminal are a cheap part. Worth diagnosing before assuming the furnace is finished.
